My experience of the Food Bank:
New Years Resolutions are a long standing tradition for many. But not for a second does anyone think they will start their year in a Food Bank with their small child. While others around me danced with joy at their new found motivation to improve their bad habits or try a new hobby, my soul was crushed in 2025 with guilt as I looked into my little girls eyes as we made our way to the Food Bank that day.
I’m so sorry my darling how did we ever get here, I thought to myself but like I had done many times before I raised a smile to my girl, my magic, my hero while I held back tears and pretended all was ok, angry at myself for ever allowing domestic abuse to be part of her life, part of mine. We had no life, only existence.a
We were instantly greeted by such warmth and welcome by a Team of Angels in Green. We were offered a drink and a snack and a place to sit, my daughter who just turned 5 was happy to see an area of books and some toys. She happily played in that corner with a kind member of staff while I was seen by Marilyn.
Although it was late for my daughter to be out, especially in Winter it was very much needed and she was ok.
They always do their very best to meet all your needs and go above and beyond to get any extras if they can. I was referred to by the lovely staff at my GP surgery so they already had what they needed for us. But they ask all the right questions to find what’s best for you…like do you have cooking facilities?
The shame instantly lifted and I could breathe…my little girl can actually eat a decent meal. Marilyn took time to listen. For the first time in many years I wasn’t actually invisible. I was worried about finances so she instantly put in a referral to Citizens Advice who contacted me approximately a week later.
Fast forward 3 months and I have just collected Keys to a permenant home, my daughter is settled in her school and making friends and I have a new job. My bank account is healthy and my fridge and cupboard are always full of good wholesome food and I could have never done that without Marilyn and her wonderful colleagues. They truly are a blessing.
Every person from every walk of life is welcome in a Food Bank. With the cost of living crisis, it’s not just people fleeing abuse or homeless people, it can be full time workers, mortgage owners, who need a bit of extra help… They don’t turn anyone away who needs help.Don’t ever feel ashamed of using a food bank. It’s the kindest thing you can do for yourself and family in your hour of need. Thank you all
